About functional medicine

What is functional medicine?

Functional Medicine is an individualised, systems-oriented approach to healthcare that aims to understand the factors contributing to a person's health concerns, rather than focusing solely on the symptoms they experience.

Rather than viewing symptoms in isolation, Functional Medicine seeks to explore the wider picture of a person's health. The aim is to identify relevant underlying contributors, develop a personalised plan and support the body's normal physiological processes alongside appropriate medical care.

What it looks at

The whole picture, not a single symptom

It recognises that the human body is an interconnected system, with multiple factors influencing how we feel and function.

  • —Nutrition
  • —Sleep
  • —Stress
  • —Physical activity
  • —Environmental exposures
  • —Genetics
  • —Medical history
  • —Social circumstances

Working alongside your medical care

At its heart, Functional Medicine combines a detailed understanding of an individual's health history with established medical knowledge, appropriate investigations and tailored lifestyle interventions. It is best used as a complement to evidence-based healthcare, not as a replacement for necessary diagnosis, medication or specialist treatment.

Good to know

Every person is different

Two people with the same diagnosis may have different medical histories, lifestyles, risk factors and needs. Functional Medicine takes these individual differences into account when planning care.
